Why Prostate MRI Matters: What UPNT Recommends Before Your Biopsy

Accurate Prostate Imaging to Guide Diagnosis and Treatment in North Texas
At Urology Partners of North Texas (UPNT), we believe that early and accurate detection of prostate cancer starts with advanced imaging. That’s why we strongly recommend a multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) before prostate biopsy in many cases. It helps us detect significant cancers, avoid unnecessary procedures, and tailor your care.

What Is a Multiparametric MRI?

A multiparametric MRI uses multiple imaging sequences to build a clear, detailed view of the prostate. One of the most important sequences is the Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC), derived from Diffusion-Weighted Imaging (DWI) — which is especially effective in spotting clinically significant prostate cancer.

Key Imaging Components:

ADC imaging is considered the most valuable sequence for cancer detection in the peripheral zone, per current clinical guidelines (PI-RADS v2.1).

Why We Recommend MRI Before Prostate Biopsy

Benefit

What It Means for You

Avoids unnecessary biopsies

May help rule out cancer in low-risk men

Improves targeting

Helps pinpoint suspicious areas for precise sampling

Detects significant cancers

Focuses on aggressive, high-risk cancers

Reduces overdiagnosis

Helps avoid biopsies of low-risk or harmless tissue

MRI before biopsy allows us to make smarter, more confident decisions about your care.

When Might You Need a Prostate MRI?

UPNT may recommend a prostate MRI if you:

What to Expect From the MRI Process

UPNT does not perform the MRI scan in-house, but we’ll help coordinate your imaging at one of our trusted partner centers. Once your scan is complete, our urologists will personally review and explain your results during your visit.

Understanding MRI Results with PI-RADS score

MRI results are graded using the PI-RADS system — a 1–5 scale that estimates the likelihood of clinically significant prostate cancer.

PI-RADS Score

What It Means

1–2

Low likelihood of cancer

3

Equivocal — may need more evaluation

4–5

High likelihood of significant prostate cancer

Our UPNT team will interpret the results, explain them clearly, and help guide the next steps.

Why Quality Matters: Choosing the Right Imaging Center

Not all prostate MRIs are created equal. Image clarity, machine calibration, and radiologist expertise are critical for accurate diagnosis. That’s why UPNT refers exclusively to imaging partners we trust:
These centers follow PI-RADS protocols and deliver high-resolution images essential for diagnosis, biopsy planning, or active surveillance.

Why Trust UPNT With Your Prostate Care?

Whether you’re screening for the first time or evaluating new symptoms, UPNT provides clear answers and compassionate, evidence-based care.
